Live Yeast and Yeast Cell Wall – A Prebiotic Rich in Beta-Glucan and Mannan Oligosaccharides
Chitacell Chitika is a yeast cell wall prebiotic derived from Saccharomyces cerevisiae, containing beta-glucan and mannan oligosaccharides.
Live Saccharomyces cerevisiae increases oxygen consumption in the rumen and promotes anaerobic fermentation. This results in the growth of cellulolytic bacteria (lactate-consuming bacteria) and competes with lactic acid-producing bacteria for sugar consumption, preventing the rapid accumulation of lactate and the occurrence of ruminal acidosis. These mechanisms help increase rumen pH, improve fiber digestion, and boost acetate production, ultimately enhancing livestock performance.
The yeast cell wall accounts for about 25% of the dry weight of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Its key components include:
Mannan oligosaccharides and beta-glucan, due to their neutral charge, do not absorb trace nutrients. However, their helical structure provides a high adsorption capacity for mycotoxins.
Beta-glucans are known as immune system enhancers. They bind to immune cell receptors, especially phagocytes, increasing their bacterial-killing activity. Additionally, they stimulate the reticuloendothelial system, leading to the production of macrophages, which play a crucial role in immunity. These macrophages eliminate invading particles through phagocytosis, making beta-glucans essential for non-specific immune stimulation.
Beta-glucans bind to various polar, nonpolar, and bipolar mycotoxins (such as Aflatoxin B1, Zearalenone, and Deoxynivalenol) through hydrogen and Van der Waals bonds, effectively neutralizing them.
Mannan oligosaccharides (MOS) positively impact gut microbiota by preventing harmful bacteria like E. coli, Salmonella, and Clostridia from attaching to the intestinal walls. Instead, these harmful bacteria bind to MOS and are expelled through feces.
MOS also serve as an energy source for probiotics, such as Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli, promoting their growth while preventing pathogenic bacteria from utilizing them. This mechanism enhances gut microbiota balance and improves overall gut health.
Many pathogenic bacteria need to attach to cell membranes to exert their effects (via reproduction or toxin secretion). MOS competes with these bacteria for binding sites, preventing their colonization and promoting their expulsion. Additionally, MOS binds to fimbriae of pathogens, preventing attachment and even dislodging those already attached, further aiding in their removal.
