Magnesium oxide (MgO) is one of the essential elements used in livestock and poultry feed, playing a significant role in most of the animals’ body reactions. With the industrialization of animal husbandry and the shift from forage-based diets to grain and high-carbohydrate diets, it is necessary to use compounds that can maintain a stable rumen pH.

Magnesium oxide is a white powder with high thermal conductivity. Due to its unique features and properties, it has become one of the essential materials in various industries.

Micronized magnesium oxide is not only used as an important mineral in ceramic production and similar industrial applications, but it also has a special place in medical, cosmetic, food, agricultural, livestock, and advanced nanotechnology industries.

Fresh green forages that grow in spring, especially grasses, are poor in magnesium. As a result, grazing animals in pastures may experience various disorders, including grass tetany and magnesium deficiency.

Magnesium, as one of the macro-elements in animal feed, plays a crucial role in most body reactions. Additionally, with the industrialization of livestock breeding and the change from forage-based diets to grain and carbohydrate-rich diets, it is necessary to use compounds that can maintain a normal rumen environment.

Magnesium oxide is one of these compounds. Due to its buffering properties, and since pKa is not defined for magnesium oxide and it has relative insolubility in water, it acts as a slow-release neutralizing agent in the rumen. Despite all of this, extensive research indicates that magnesium oxide has a positive effect on increasing rumen pH and milk fat percentage.

In diets containing corn silage and pasture-based forages, if magnesium oxide is included at about 0.4 to 0.8 percent of dry matter, it can increase milk production and milk fat percentage. To use this compound in animal feed, sufficient knowledge about its effects and properties, such as reaction rate, particle size impact on mineral metabolism, and its effect on acidity, is required.

The acid-neutralizing capacity of magnesium oxide is approximately 41.4 to 49 milliequivalents per day, which is significantly higher than other buffers and neutralizers like sodium bicarbonate (11.9 milliequivalents per day). The solubility of magnesium oxide in water varies and depends on the particle size of the produced magnesium oxide.
